(F)DP backs EU treaties and says no to a majority of the cantons

The FDP backs the new EU treaties. A simple majority of the people should be sufficient in the referendum - according to the party line, a majority of the cantons is not required. The delegates took these fundamental decisions in Bern on Saturday.

Important principles of liberal thought are Federalism and Subsidiarity. The idea behind this difficult word is that as many decisions as possible should be made where they directly affect people:

  • What can be decided nationally should be decided nationally, not outsourced to international organisations.

  • What can be decided at cantonal level should be decided at cantonal level.

  • What can be decided at municipal level should be decided there.

In this context, the Two-chamber system from the National Council and the Council of States - or, in the case of votes, the majority of the people and the cantons. This concept ensures Equal opportunitiesOtherwise we would only have to vote in a handful of large cantons (AG, BE, ZH, GE, VD) - the rest would be meaningless.

Anyone who does not understand the principle of federalism is not liberal. And those who are against the majority of the cantons for ideological reasons, disregards fundamental liberal values.
