Friends of the Constitution supports the Free Speech Union Switzerland (FSUS)

On 29 October 2024, the Free Speech Union Switzerland (FSUS) was officially launched in Zurich with the aim of defending and promoting freedom of expression in Switzerland. At a time when freedom of expression is coming under increasing pressure, the FSUS is a non-partisan organisation that stands by all those whose freedom of expression is restricted.

The FSUS is affiliated to the International Association of Free Speech Unions (IAFSU) and is firmly opposed to censorship and the effects of cancel culture. The organisation has set itself the goal of taking a leading role in Switzerland in order to protect and further develop the five fundamental freedoms - including freedom of expression, freedom of information and freedom of the media as well as academic and artistic freedom. These freedoms are increasingly under threat worldwide, but also in Switzerland, particularly through automated censorship mechanisms such as those already being discussed in the EU and which could also affect Switzerland.

The work of the FSUS centres on providing legal support for its members and for anyone whose freedom of expression is at risk. This includes not only legal advice, but also representation in court. In addition, three committees have been established that focus specifically on the defence of academic freedom, freedom of the press and other constitutional rights.

"Free societies should never fear the free exchange of ideas," emphasises Andrea Seaman, President of the FSUS. "The solution to controversial speech or disinformation is not less speech or more legal intervention. We must vigorously defend the right to freedom of expression."

Friends of the Constitution supports the FSUS and its important mission to preserve the fundamental values of our democratic society. For more information on the FSUS and how to get involved or donate, please visit the organisation's website: www.fsus.ch.
